2. History and Development

Faculty of Foreign Languages, Hanoi Metropolitan University (formerly known as Hanoi College of Education) was officially established in 1978 with two main fields of training in Russian and English. In 1993, the training ​​focus switched to Lower Secondary English Teacher Education. Since 2007, meet the manpower needs of the society, three additional fields of training have been opened including: English (2007), Chinese (2010) and Primary English Teacher Education (2011). After the college was upgraded to a university in 2015, in school year 2016-2017, Faculty of Foreign Languages has been assigned to train two out of seven newly-opened majors of the university: English Linguistics and Chinese Linguistics. The Faculty provides training to not only English-major and Chinese-major students but also non-English language major, non-Chinese major and non-Korean major students in the other faculties of the university. With remarkable achievements in training, scientific research and development cooperation, Faculty of Foreign Languages has confirmed its own position as one of the key units of Hanoi Metropolitan University

3. Strengths of the Faculty

Throughout the history of nearly 40 years of development, with the mission of providing high quality human resources for employers, Faculty of Foreign Languages is proud of having proven its capacity in training with the positive feedback from recruitment agencies and with the success that former students have achieved on their career path.

The motto of training is to share knowledge, sharpen skills, focus on the quality of training, and select suitable contents and teaching methods for the characteristics and nature of each major. After becoming a member of the Faculty of Foreign Language family, students will have the opportunity to learn in a professional environment, with the opportunity to study study abroad in the second year and do their internship at one of the joint universities or colleges in China and Taiwan. The students will also have the chance to participate in language summer camps abroad and communicate with native speakers to practice foreign language skills. After class hours, students of the faculty are involved in a lot of extracurricular activities:  Olympic English Contest, FFL’s got talent, Ring the golden bell, Miss FFL, or the activities of the English Club and Chinese Club.

4. Academic division in the Faculty

The staff of the Faculty of Foreign Languages includes 34 lecturers and teacher trainers and the faculty is divided into three academic divisions: EFL Teacher Training Division, English Language Division and Chinese Language Division

EFL Teacher Training Division

EFL Teacher Training Division is the training center of primary and lower secondary English teachers across the country, especially in Hanoi. Students of this division are mainly pre-service primary and lower secondary English teachers of different training programs: BA in English language teaching and TEFL certificates. Besides, the division also provides tailored training courses for in-service English teachers. The staff of this division are certified and experienced teacher trainers who graduated from prestigous universities and gained certificates in EFL teacher training and professional development from well-known teacher training institutions. Students of this division are provided with comprehensive training in terms of knowledge of English language and methodology, teaching skills and professional ethics so that students can quickly integrate with the teaching environment right after graduation.

English Language Division

English Language Division is the largest division accounting for 2/3 of the total number of English teachers of the faculty. Students of this division are mainly English for Business and Tourism major and non-English major of the other faculties in the universities. The staff of this division also co-operate with EFL Teacher Training Division to deliver English proficiency courses, English teacher training courses, ESP courses (English for Business, English for Tourism, English for IT, English for Vietnamese studies, etc.) and Translation and interpretation courses. Students of this division are well-trained with a balance between knowledge, professional skills and practical experiences to meet the requirements of the human resources.

Chinese Language Division

Chinese Language Division was established in  2010 and have trained Chinese-major students at college level for 7 years and at university level since school year 2016-2017. Despite being the youngest division in the faculty, Chinese Language Division has undergone rapid and remarkable development in both quantity of students and quality of training. This division is in charge of teaching both Chinese and Korean to students in the Faculty of Foreign Languages as well as in the other faculties of the university. Students of this division include Chinese for Tourism major students, Chinese for Translation and Interpretation major students, non-Chinese major students and non-Korean major students. Students of this division are provided with comprehensive training. Besides, they will have the chance to do their internship or continue their study in one of the joint universities in China or Taiwan.

5. Academic programs

Faculty of Foreign Languages are currently in charge of six majors: English Linguistics (Degree of Bachelor), Chinese Linguistics (Degree of Bachelor), English (Degree of Associate), Chinese (Degree of Associate), Primary English language teaching (Degree of Associate), Lower secondary English language teaching (Degree of Associate). In school year 2016-2017, the faculty plans to submit a proposal to the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training for opening a new major in English language teaching (Degree of Bachelor).

After graduation, students of the faculty are expected to achieve the corresponding foreign language competence according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (B2 for English major students obtaining a Degree of Associate and C1 for English major students obtaining a Degree of Bachelor). Students are qualified and eligible to apply for different jobs such as teaching positions at the primary schools, lower secondary schools, high schools, and language centers. They will also be able to work in diplomatic organizations, representative offices, commercial offices, government organizations and NGOs at home and abroad. Besides, students can work as tour guides and take other job positions in the tourism sector.

In addition to the professional knowledge and skills which are obligatory for the majors, students of Faculty of Foreign Languages are equipped with soft skills which are essential to the future working environment such as planning skills, leadership skills, organizational skills critical and logical thinking skills, problem solving skills, teamwork skills and communication skills.

Under the roof of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, students will acquire comprehensive education both physically and mentally for a bright future. The quality of training has been proved by the growing number of students enrolled in the academic programs of faculty in recent years. The faculty has always been in top three faculties of the university regarding admission statistics.

The staff of Faculty of Foreign Languages ​​is proud of what we have achieved and confidently assert that we are ready to fulfill all the missions that Hanoi Metropolitan University and the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training assign.
