VHO – On May 22, Hanoi Metropolitan University held a seminar titled “Enhancing the Quality of Education on Thăng Long – Hanoi History and Culture in Schools Across the Capital.” Many presentations offered insightful perspectives and practical experiences aimed at improving the quality of teaching history and culture of Thăng Long – Hanoi in local schools.

Nearly 80 papers were submitted to the seminar, reflecting concerns, contributions, and the sharing of outcomes and practical experiences aimed at enhancing the quality of education on the history and culture of Thăng Long – Hanoi in schools across the capital in the coming time.

This seminar also served as a meaningful forum that received special attention from experts, scholars, administrators, and educators.

Speaking at the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Anh Tuấn, Chairman of the Council of Hanoi Metropolitan University, emphasized that history and culture are always essential components in the general education curricula of countries around the world, as they represent the soul and identity of each nation.

The inclusion of Thăng Long – Hanoi’s history and culture in education holds great significance in helping students in the capital understand the historical, cultural, and scientific values of historical and cultural relics, recognize the position and potential of the capital city, and thereby nurture pride and a sense of respect and responsibility for preserving these historical and cultural values of both the capital and the nation—especially in today’s context of globalization, where national historical and cultural identity is regarded as a fundamental value of every country.

According to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Anh Tuấn, in the current period, the history and culture of Thăng Long – Hanoi are receiving special attention from the city government. On March 17, 2021, the Hanoi Party Committee issued Program No. 06-CTr/TU on “Cultural Development, Improving Human Resource Quality, and Building a Civilized, Elegant Hanoian for the 2021–2025 Period.”

Hanoi Metropolitan University has been assigned by the Hanoi People’s Committee to develop and implement the Project on Fostering Knowledge of Hanoiology for General Education Teachers in Hanoi for the 2021–2025 Period, with a vision toward 2030 and orientation to 2045.

In recent times, Hanoi Metropolitan University, in collaboration with the City Party Committee’s Propaganda Department, the Department of Education and Training, the Department of Culture and Sports, and various experts, has basically completed the development of the training materials on Hanoiology for general education teachers across the city. In these materials, history and culture are key components, passionately compiled by experts, scholars, and university lecturers.

Emphasizing the necessity of enhancing the quality of education on the history and culture of Thăng Long – Hanoi in schools—to help the younger generation better understand and love the rich cultural heritage of this thousand-year-old land—experts and researchers at the seminar discussed the fundamental aspects of Hanoi's culture that should be integrated into school curricula, as well as the distinctive characteristics that both converge and radiate from the historical and cultural space of Thăng Long – Hanoi.

Many presentations by staff and teachers from local general education schools assessed the current state of teaching Thăng Long – Hanoi’s history and culture and shared experiences in organizing hands-on learning activities to enrich the quality of education in this field.

Several papers submitted and presented at the seminar conveyed profound messages and content, such as:

  • “Hanoi Culture in Contemporary Life – Fundamental Contents to Be Taught in General Education Schools in Hanoi” by Prof. Dr. Lê Hồng Lý, Chairman of the Vietnam Folk Arts Association;

  • “The Converging and Spreading Characteristics of the Historical and Cultural Space of Thăng Long – Hanoi” by Prof. Dr., People's Teacher Nguyễn Quang Ngọc, Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Historical Sciences, and Member of the Council of Hanoi Metropolitan University;

  • “Teaching Historical and Cultural Content in the Local Education Subject at General Schools in Hanoi” by Dr. Nguyễn Thị Bích, Hanoi National University of Education.

In discussions on methods to improve the teaching quality of Thăng Long – Hanoi history and culture, Prof. Dr., People's Teacher Nguyễn Quang Ngọc emphasized that Thăng Long – Hanoi is the center of convergence, exchange, crystallization, and diffusion of the most outstanding and significant historical and cultural values of both the Capital and the entire country. These values can only be accurately identified through a comprehensive, interdisciplinary research approach.

Prof. Dr., People's Teacher Nguyễn Quang Ngọc emphasized that improving the quality of teaching Thăng Long – Hanoi history and culture must involve intercultural-historical methodologies and instruction based on historical and cultural spaces.

The delegates focused their discussions on key topics such as enhancing the quality of education on Thăng Long – Hanoi’s history and culture in schools across the capital, as well as the content and teaching methods for integrating Hanoi’s historical and cultural knowledge into school curricula. These efforts aim toward making Hanoiology an official subject in schools throughout Hanoi, in line with Directive No. 30-TC/TU of the Hanoi Party Committee on “Strengthening the Party’s leadership in building a civilized and elegant Hanoian.”
