[VOV2] – In the context of globalization, a nation's historical and cultural identity is considered a core value of each country. Therefore, enhancing the quality of education on the history and culture of Thăng Long – Hà Nội in schools across the capital has become increasingly essential.

On May 22, Hanoi Metropolitan University organized a seminar titled “Enhancing the Quality of Education on Thăng Long – Hà Nội History and Culture in Schools Across the Capital City.”

Overview of the Seminar

Attending the seminar were Prof. Dr. People's Teacher Phùng Hữu Phú – Former Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee, Former Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda Department; Mr. Đào Xuân Dũng – Deputy Head of the Hanoi Party Committee's Propaganda Department; along with experts, scientists, representatives from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, teachers from several schools in the city, and representatives from relevant units.

In the current context, the history and culture of Thăng Long – Hà Nội have received special attention from the city. The Hanoi Party Committee issued Program No. 06-CTr/TU on “Cultural development, improvement of human resources quality, and building of elegant and civilized Hanoians in the 2021–2025 period.” Under this program, Hanoi Metropolitan University was assigned by the Hanoi People's Committee to develop and implement the project “Providing training in Hanoi Studies for general education teachers in Hanoi for the 2021–2025 period, with orientation to 2030 and a vision toward 2045.”

The seminar was organized to provide a scientific and practical basis to discuss content and effective teaching methods for Hanoi’s history and culture in schools across the city. The goal is to eventually introduce Hanoi Studies as an official subject in schools throughout the capital.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Anh Tuấn, Chairman of the University Council, Hanoi Metropolitan University

Speaking at the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Anh Tuấn emphasized that educating students about the history and culture of Thăng Long – Hà Nội plays a vital role in nurturing pride and a sense of appreciation among students in the capital for preserving Hanoi’s and the nation’s cultural and historical values. Especially in today’s globalized world, cultural and historical identity is considered a fundamental value of each nation.

Prof. Dr. Lê Hồng Lý, President of the Vietnam Folklore Arts Association

Prof. Dr. Lê Hồng Lý stressed the need to expand the content on the culture of the greater Hanoi region to be taught to students. This includes both intangible culture (festivals, art forms, folk paintings, traditional games, etc.) and tangible culture (notable relics in urban and suburban areas), famous Hanoians, cuisine, and more. All these elements should be integrated into general education to help the young generation develop their character and become the future caretakers of a civilized, cultured Hanoi.

Prof. Dr. People's Teacher Nguyễn Quang Ngọc, Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Historical Sciences, Council Member of Hanoi Metropolitan University

Prof. Dr. Nguyễn Quang Ngọc asserted that in order to improve the quality of education in the history and culture of Thăng Long – Hà Nội, it is necessary to thoroughly and systematically study the historical values of the capital. The focus should be on organizing interdisciplinary teaching methods and fostering the creativity of both teachers and students.

Dr. Nguyễn Thị Bích, Hanoi National University of Education

In her presentation, Dr. Nguyễn Thị Bích pointed out the difficulties faced by high schools regarding teaching materials and qualified teachers. Strategically, to improve the quality of education in Thăng Long – Hà Nội history and culture, it is essential to provide in-depth training for teachers. In the meantime, schools should select educators whose backgrounds align most closely with local content—such as literature, history, geography, or civic education.

Dr. Lê Thị Huyền shared that the local education program in Hanoi has already been extensively and effectively implemented, helping to spread the historical and cultural values of Thăng Long – Hà Nội. Moving forward, she emphasized the importance of leveraging all available resources—from city authorities, schools, and local communities—to complete and standardize the teaching materials and deliver knowledge in an effective and engaging manner for students.

M.A. Trần Thị Thu, Teacher at Cầu Giấy Secondary School

M.A. Trần Thị Thu emphasized that promoting creative experiential activities related to Thăng Long – Hà Nội’s history and culture is an effective approach to help students explore knowledge beyond textbooks. “We organize local education lessons in various experiential forms such as dramatization, historical role-playing, tour guide simulations, and field trips to museums and heritage sites. These experiences help students better absorb knowledge,” she shared.

Dr. Lê Thị Thu Hương, Dean of the Faculty of Culture and Tourism, Hanoi Metropolitan University

Dr. Lê Thị Thu Hương shared that recently, the university has collaborated with the Party Committee's Propaganda Department, the Department of Education and Training, the Department of Culture and Sports, and experts to complete the compilation of training materials on Hanoi Studies for general education teachers in the city.
