Arizona State University (ASU) Explores the “New University” Model in Hanoi

Overview of the working session.
On the afternoon of May 12, 2026, Hanoi Metropolitan University held a working session with a delegation from Arizona State University (ASU), along with representatives from Hanoi’s departments and agencies, for an on-site survey and discussions on the orientation for developing a “new university” (“greenfield university”) model in Hanoi through international cooperation.
The session was implemented based on the cooperation plan between the Hanoi People’s Committee and the ASU Board of Regents (USA), aiming to concretize the contents of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two parties. This is considered an important step in the Capital’s strategy to develop high-quality higher education, strengthen international integration, and promote innovation in education.

The delegation included Ms. Đặng Trần Phương Anh, ASU Country Director in Vietnam; Mr. Paul Tan, Director of Cintana Education for the Asia-Pacific region; Ms. Đặng Thị Như Quỳnh, Strategy Director of Cintana Education; along with representatives from the Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Education and Training, and related agencies.
Representing Hanoi Metropolitan University were Dr. Trần Anh Tuấn, Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice Rector of the University, together with leaders of departments and academic faculties.
Within the framework of the session, the delegation discussed survey contents related to the University’s training model, academic development orientation, facilities, and international connectivity capacity.

At the session, Dr. Trần Anh Tuấn introduced an overview of the University’s formation and development process. He stated that in recent years, the University has continuously innovated its governance model, improved training quality, promoted scientific research, and expanded international cooperation. Currently, the University provides multidisciplinary education with an increasingly expanding scale, meeting human resource demands in many sectors of society, particularly education, technology, foreign languages, urban management, and fields serving smart urban development. Dr. Trần Anh Tuấn emphasized that advantages in location, campus area, infrastructure planning, support from the city, and a high-quality faculty team provide favorable foundations for Arizona State University to study and propose the implementation of the “Greenfield University” model at one of Hanoi Metropolitan University’s campuses in the near future.

The Arizona State University delegation conducted an on-site survey of Hanoi Metropolitan University’s facilities, educational spaces, and campus planning. ASU representatives highly appreciated the University’s potential and development advantages, and stated that they would continue discussions with relevant stakeholders for further study and reference in proposing suitable cooperation orientations and models in the coming period.
Through this working session, all parties expect to open broader opportunities for in-depth cooperation in higher education, scientific research, technology transfer, and the development of high-quality human resources, thereby contributing to the internationalization of higher education in Hanoi. The survey and exchange also reaffirmed the increasingly prominent role and position of Hanoi Metropolitan University within the international educational cooperation network, moving toward the goal of building a modern, innovative, and globally integrated university environment.
