2. Introduction

The Institute of Hanoi Studies and International Education is an academic unit under Hanoi Metropolitan University, entrusted with the functions of undergraduate and postgraduate education, scientific research, knowledge and technology transfer through an interdisciplinary approach, with a focus on Vietnamese Studies, Cultural Studies, Hanoi Studies, and related disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. Within the University's organizational structure, the Institute serves as a distinctive academic center, contributing to the development of specialized knowledge that supports the sustainable development of Hanoi Capital and Vietnam in the context of international integration.

Regarding its human resources, the Institute currently has 14 faculty and staff members (5 males and 9 females), including one Director, two Deputy Directors, two Program Directors/Deputy Program Directors, together with academic and administrative staff. In addition to its core personnel, the Institute has established a collaborative network of more than 30 professors, associate professors, and doctoral scholars who are leading experts in Vietnamese Studies, Cultural Studies, and Hanoi Studies. These experts participate in academic consultation, collaborative research, and teaching, providing valuable scholarly resources that ensure the academic quality and depth of the Institute's research and educational activities.

At present, the Institute of Hanoi Studies and International Education directly manages and delivers two full-time undergraduate programs: Vietnamese Studies and Cultural Studies. These academic programs are designed with an application-oriented approach that closely integrates theoretical knowledge with social practice, meeting the demand for high-quality human resources while aligning with the mission, vision, educational philosophy, and development strategy of Hanoi Metropolitan University. The curricula are developed based on an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating contemporary research and educational trends while addressing the practical development needs of Hanoi and the country.

The Institute's development strategy toward 2030, with a vision to 2045, has been formulated in close alignment with the processes of globalization, international integration, and the comprehensive reform of higher education. The Institute positions itself as a distinctive education and research institution that both preserves the rich cultural and academic heritage of Thang Long–Hanoi and responds proactively to the rapid transformations of the socio-economic landscape, science, technology, and innovation.

Within an educational environment deeply rooted in the cultural identity of Hanoi, the Institute remains committed to a liberal education philosophy that places learners at the center of the educational process while promoting their comprehensive intellectual, professional, personal, and ethical development. The Institute emphasizes a balance between in-depth disciplinary knowledge and interdisciplinary as well as intercultural perspectives, thereby equipping students with strong professional competencies, a sense of social responsibility, a commitment to community service and national development, creativity, and the ability to thrive in multicultural environments. In the coming years, the Institute plans to expand both the scale and scope of its academic programs by establishing undergraduate programs in Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Culture, launching postgraduate programs in Vietnamese Studies and Cultural Studies, and developing professional training courses leading to certificates and certifications in Hanoi Studies, Cultural Industries, Vietnamese Language, and Vietnamese Culture for International Learners. This strategic direction aims to capitalize on the Institute's academic strengths, meet evolving social needs, promote cultural exchange and cultural diplomacy, and enhance the international image of Hanoi and Vietnam in the context of deep global integration.

3. Functions and Responsibilities

The Institute of Hanoi Studies and International Education (IHSIE) is responsible for organizing education, conducting research, facilitating knowledge transfer, and providing policy consultation in the fields of Hanoi Studies, Vietnamese Studies, Cultural Studies, cultural industries, cultural tourism, linguistics, local education, and other related interdisciplinary disciplines.

With the vision of becoming an interdisciplinary academic center closely associated with the development of Hanoi Capital in the context of international integration and digital transformation, the Institute serves as a bridge connecting the University, government agencies, enterprises, and the community to promote cultural values, heritage, and intellectual resources for the sustainable development of Hanoi and Vietnam.

The Institute of Hanoi Studies and International Education is entrusted with the following responsibilities:

  • Training high-quality human resources: Organizing undergraduate and postgraduate programs in Vietnamese Studies and Cultural Studies based on interdisciplinary, application-oriented, and internationally integrated approaches; developing postgraduate programs associated with Hanoi Studies, Vietnamese Studies, culture, tourism, cultural industries, and sustainable development.
  • Community education and knowledge development: Organizing professional development and continuing education programs to enhance expertise in Hanoi Culture, Cultural Industries, and Heritage Economy; providing consultancy services, conducting research, facilitating knowledge transfer, and publishing academic works for the benefit of the community.
  • Scientific research and policy consultation: Implementing research projects and academic programs in Vietnamese Studies, Cultural Studies, Hanoi Studies, and cultural industries; providing consultancy, scientific evaluation, peer review, and evidence-based recommendations to support policymaking and the development of Hanoi Capital.
  • Cooperation and development: Expanding partnerships with government agencies, organizations, enterprises, and domestic and international partners; promoting collaborative research, education, academic exchange, and knowledge transfer to enhance the University's academic reputation and international standing.
  • Community engagement and promotion of cultural values: Conducting consultancy, educational, communication, cultural preservation, and heritage promotion activities; strengthening community engagement, fostering creativity, and contributing to the sustainable development of Hanoi Capital and Vietnam.

Educational Cooperation

With the strategic vision of developing as an interdisciplinary education and research institute closely connected to the development of Hanoi Capital, the Institute of Hanoi Studies and International Education has established and maintained an extensive network of partnerships with universities, research institutes, government agencies, scientific organizations, and domestic as well as international partners. This collaborative network not only provides a solid academic foundation for the Institute's education and research activities but also contributes to the development of a knowledge ecosystem that supports the sustainable growth of Hanoi and Vietnam in the context of international integration and digital transformation.

At present, the Institute maintains regular cooperation with numerous prestigious higher education institutions and research organizations in Hanoi and across Vietnam. Through collaborative programs in education, scientific research, academic conferences, and professional development, the Institute has gradually established itself as an interdisciplinary academic hub in the fields of Hanoi Studies, Vietnamese Studies, Cultural Studies, cultural industries, local education, and creative urban development.

The Institute's network of affiliated faculty members and academic collaborators currently includes more than 30 professors, associate professors, doctoral scholars, and leading experts with distinguished academic reputations and extensive experience in research, teaching, and policy consultation. Most of these scholars are affiliated with Vietnam National University, Hanoi and its member institutions, including the VNU University of Social Sciences and Humanities, the VNU University of Science, the VNU University of Economics and Business, the VNU University of Education, the VNU University of Law, as well as many other research and educational institutions. The participation of these interdisciplinary experts significantly enhances the Institute's academic quality, research capacity, and ability to develop educational programs that meet contemporary standards and international benchmarks.

Beyond research collaboration, the Institute's partner network also plays a vital role in implementing high-quality academic programs, professional training courses, local education initiatives, Vietnamese language and culture programs for international learners, as well as projects related to cultural industries, cultural tourism, and creative spaces. These partnerships strengthen the practical relevance, applicability, and social responsiveness of the Institute's academic programs in the context of higher education reform and the development of a knowledge-based economy.

As part of its long-term development strategy, the Institute of Hanoi Studies and International Education will continue expanding its international partnership network by strengthening collaboration with universities, research institutes, cultural organizations, and global academic communities. Through these efforts, the Institute aspires to become a leading interdisciplinary academic center for Hanoi Studies and Vietnamese Studies, contributing to the promotion of the cultural values of Thang Long–Hanoi and supporting the sustainable, creative, and culturally rich development of Hanoi Capital.

6. Academic Programs
